Craigslist Spammers
Craigslist is the largest classified advertiser in the US -- probably in the world. Craigslist has its good points and its bad. It can be the most irritating, frustrating "service" to utilize that you'll ever struggle with. The vast majority of Craigslist's problems come directly from its devoted class of shameless spammers. Spammers fill its listings with nonsensical crap, with scams, with miscategorized nonsense, with outright ripoffs, with illegal products, you name it. The sheer volume of spam makes finding what you're looking for, problematic. Craigslist has divided its classifieds into categories, just like any newspaper might. The idea is that if you're looking for, say, a boat for sale, you can browse the boats for sale section. If you need a marine service, for instance, you can browse the marine services section. It's a simple enough concept for those with half a brain. Unfortunately, a large and growing segment of the population doesn't possess half a brain. In fact, many seem to possess no brain at all.
Our office peruses the BOATS FOR SALE category on the Seattle-Tacoma Craigslist server every day, all day, as a necessity of our enterprize. As such, we naturally become acutely aware of the repeat, rampant, out of control spammers. Some of these guys will post cars for sale, airplanes for sale, paintings of boats for sale, painting services, engine repair services-- one nut job even posts photography services under boats for sale. He posts often, conspicuously, copiously, blatantly, and he gets flagged off over and over and over. But he is never deterred. This is the mentality of the class of people who are working hard to destroy Craigslist as a resource for the rest of us. We've watched this play out dozens of times in various categories -- the spammers will begin to get an upper hand until the spams outnumber the legitimate posts. From then on its downhill for the real users. There are no longer enough real viewers to flag off the spammers, so the spammers take over the garden like weeds, never once mustering the two brain cells required to figure out that no one is left to read their spammy ads. It does less and less good to post real ads in these sections because, more and more, the real readers have given up trying to sort through the spam. They stop reading ALL ads in those sections. Pretty soon, you have an entire category that is 96% spam, and no one reads it, and no legitimate users post in it. Take a look at the "activities" section, as an example.
Craigslist could have been such a service....but it looks as though the parasites will ultimately kill the host they feed on. Down with spammers.
We became so incredibly disgusted with one particular Seattle spammer that we decided to write him a note, just to see if he could justify his incessant spamming of the Craigslist BOATS FOR SALE section. We figured this piece of human garbage would be smart enough not to reply at all. We were mistaken. He proved to be far dumber than we had even imagined. This guy relentlessly posts spam like this:
My name is Dan. I'm a Photographer looking to help you sell your Sail Boat, Trawler or Yacht fast. I'm no Neil Rabinowitz. He's one of the Best Photographers out there. I also don't charge as much as he would to make you boat ad look the way it should. I start at $80.00 per boat.
Not only do I do still work for your ad. I can also offer High end video's that can be sent out, Loaded on youtube or added to your web page. The video's are made with ProHD camera. No Best Buy gear for me. They will start at $175.00.
If your looking to sell you boat, And really want people to get a good look at it. DKingImages is you first choice. More for the buck.

And he "shows off" his "expert photography" (even Photoshop has a one-button color corrector for God's sake) with masterpiece images like this:

We don't CARE if this guy makes a fool of himself. We're just tired of stumbling over his miscategorized ads all day long. So we wrote him the following note:

Subject: Video and Photos of your boat, DKingImages@aol.com - $100 (Western, Wa)
Why do you insist on posting SERVICES under BOATS FOR SALE? Seriously, many people want to know. Craigslist graciously gave you a marine SERVICES section, yet you continue to relentlessly pester everyone with services type spam. We’ll post your reply publicly, so consider it carefully. Your ads get flagged out of this section over and over and over again, yet you persist in re-posting every single time. It takes over 80 flags to get an ad removed. That means that every time your ad is flagged off, you’ve created at least 80 enemies who are sick to damned death of you poking them in the face with you spammy service ads. Why would any decent businessman do this? Why do you continue to relentlessly spam this section when you know that hundreds or thousands of people hate you for it? People go to the FOR SALE section because they want to look for BOATS FOR SALE. If they were looking for a service, they go to (try to grasp this concept) the SERVICES section. Get it? Apparently not! We can’t wait to hear your logic on this, and trust us when we say it will become very, very public. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/boa/2052847499.html
And he supplied the following reply, which we feel exemplifies the very essence and morality of all monkey-brained spammers everywhere:
