The following tradgedy is no longer the exception in America, it is the rule.
Taken from the Carson City Appeal on Dec. 6, 1995, Carson City, Nevada, USA.
To the Editor:
No one will disagree that our roads are becoming overrun with wild, rude and reckless drivers. Unfortunately, the vast majority get away free as birds, so when we finally catch one, we'd like to see a little justice done.
That was the case last January when some punk passed us near Dayton, Nv., did a couple of donuts in the road ahead of us, and came back toward us, hitting us nearly head on. When questioned by the responding officer, the driver said he'd "had a bad day" and was apparently just a little cranky, but offered no apology. We felt a charge of reckless driving was in order, and we signed the citation on the spot.
Amazingly, the Carson County prosecutor didn't think this crime merited prosecution for reckless driving. In fact, the prosecutor refused to reply to our repeated written requests for prosecution. He simply ignored us. Finally, around May, we wrote him again via registered mail, threatening to ask him to explain his logic in the local media. He replied then, but said only, in effect, that he didn't feel like filing the charge.
On 7-20-95 we asked the prosecutor's office via registered mail one last time to respond to the text you are reading now. That office would not answer us this time either.
We have a few questions, and now we're asking them publicly:
(1) Are we dealing with downright corruption here, or just some run-of-the-mill, garden-variety brand of malfeasance?
(2) How can the man who hit us get away with this? Is the Carson County Prosecutor related to the man who hit us, or is the driver a "friend of a friend" of the prosecutor? We've asked the prosecutor's office that very question via registered mail. They did not respond. If I drive 60 in a 55 they call out the swat team. What's so special about the man who hit us head on?
(3) Is the Prosecutor's Office consciously conspiring to thwart our efforts to bring this matter to court? Why?
(4) When a crime is committed, and there are multiple witnesses, and all the physical evidence in the world, what does it take to bring the matter before a judge? A Magic Word? A bribe? A new county government?
We're on our way out of this country because of this kind of crap. It's now rampant, and we feel the country is utterly out of control. Murderers walk free, reckless drivers crash head on with near impunity, yet prosecutors find the time, funding and energy to vigorously prosecute decent folks for the most whimsical of trivialities. Often the victim is prosecuted far more vigorously than the initiator. Why has simple, obvious, logical justice become an impossibility in the United States?
Lastly, we'll ask prosecutor's office bluntly:
What point is there in asking "the system" to do anything at all?
This is why societies, desperate for order and honor, turn to vigilantism.
NOTE: The prosecutor's office steadfastly refused to respond in any way, and the case was eventually dropped.
